WINNERS! Beat Sidney, Emma Alumni, Selwyn and Caius
Sidney- Typical Clare M1, first race row like apes, but fortunately apes are powerful.
Emma Alumni- Last time I raced Alumni I watched the 4 man snap a blade in half on a practice start from the sheer power he was producing. Hence we were a little worried about the first two minutes. However, we grew brains and actually rowed, sweet start, solid rhythm. Nice.
Selwyn- Bookies prediction to bump up come Lents, they row very well, but so do we, with grunt.
Caius- At 1-1 for the term, it was nice to regain the advantage. They start quickly but our rhythm is stronger, and we didnt even need to step it up at the end to hold them off, promising.
Winners yes, but why didnt FaT/LMBC/Downing come to play?

Without being able to have any outings for the past week due to the flooded river, I was a little uncertain as to what to expect - especially considering that those outings would have been used to not only practise our starts, but to DO some starts in the first place.
The row up felt pretty smooth, with it obvious that our balance has improved no end since the beginning of term. We used it to complete our first two starts of the term, which were a little basic to say the least, but they did the job.
FaT were certainly confident on the start line (with good reason, being 2 divisions above us in bumps) and made this obvious with plenty of joking around as we waited for the course to clear. I think this helped to fire us up - it certainly did me, and I was eager to give them a good run for their money.
Our lack of start practise showed as the race began and FaT immediately moved into a 1 length lead. However, after the first 15 or so strokes we hit our stride, settling at rate 35, and actually began to push back into them. Coming up to railway bridge, the course moved into FaT's favour, and they moved away again, to win by about 2 lengths at the finish.
I really wish we'd been able to practise our starts over the last week, for if we'd been level after the first 15 strokes, then maybe we could have put some more pressure on them, and the race certainly would have been closer. Regardless, this was a good row from us, and it shows how much we have progressed over the term. As long as we continue to train hard and make the improvements over the next week or so, we could make some good progress in bumps.

1st Round: Lost to LMBC II
After all the massive improvement we had made over our last two weekend outings, it was a shame that a high river meant we couldn't consolidate our work over the week before the race- in particular, more work on the starts would have been ideal. Combined with a draw against LMBCII in the first round, we were a little unlucky. However, the girls rowed fantastically- definitely the best they have done all term and they deserve to be proud of themselves. Well done!
